Whose Birthday is it Anyway?

Cards sent – tick. Food ordered – tick. Tree up – tick. Decorations up – tick. Lights working – tick.  Presents wrapped???  We’re counting down the days, aiming for the best Christmas ever! But what’s it all for? What’s the point? We are all prepared to party. But what is it we are celebrating?

In Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge put it this way.
“Merry Christmas! Out upon merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in ‘em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will,” said Scrooge indignantly, “every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!”

Scrooge was just being honest. He couldn’t see the point of Christmas and so to him all the celebrations were “Bah, humbug!” But what is the point of Christmas? If Jesus Christ was just an ordinary human being, then Christmas is meaningless. If we are only remembering the birth of a wise teacher then Christmas is a lot of fuss over nothing. “Bah, humbug!”

Christians have been celebrating Christmas for two thousand years. Listen to the message the angels brought to the shepherds.Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”  (Luke’s
Gospel chapter 2  verses 10-11) Jesus was indeed more than a man. He was the Son of God, God born as a human being to bring us all into a relationship with God our Creator. Now that really is worth celebrating! Happy Christmas everybody. As Tiny Tim liked to say, “God bless us, every one!”
